We know, we know….we say this about a lot of our employees, but really, Jen is one of those people that just always has a smile on her face. Seriously, we’ve never seen this gal frown. Jen is hardworking and passionate about what she does and not to mention, she makes some killer vinyl products. Read more from Jen herself, below!Name: Jennifer Robertson
Position at OSC: Vinyl Guru
Tell us a little bit more about what this entails? I make stickers! Ok it’s a little more detailed than that. I take the files that art sets up for customers and produce it into the product that they want. I make banners, retractable and just hanging. Cut vinyl printed and just solid colors depending what the art calls for. I can make little inserts to large posters, even back lit signs. I also make little plastic name tags, stamps, little buttons and even magnets for your refrigerator.
Where did you go to college? I went to 4 different colleges. I started at NDSCS where I took a couple general summer classes to prepare myself. In the fall I started at UW-Superior where I started my degree in Marine Biology, but after the first year I realized it wasn’t for me. I then transferred to UW-Stevens Point and changed my major to Graphic Design which was a bigger passion for me as my dad had a race-car and I was more interested in designing for that. After 3 years there, I then transferred back towards home to MSUM where I graduated with a BA-Graphic Design.
Where did you start your career? I started at CI Sport in the embroidery until I put a needle through my finger. I then went up to the digitizing department where I got to set up the art for the embroidery machines. After a couple months got cross trained into the art department where I then got to do the art and design for all the different garments. During this time I came across a small 24” plotter someone was selling and from there was history. I got into making small things at home even got to design a couple of my dad’s race-cars with it. It was a lot harder to do then with all the colors and layering than it is now to just print them in one sticker.
How long have you been with OSC? 4 years 3 months.
Favorite thing about your job at OSC? The people I work with are great! And just the variety of different things that I get to do on a daily basis. There are always new things happening and coming out with vinyl, so always new things to do and try.
Favorite OSC tradition, event or work perk? Anything where we get out of the office for a day or even a couple hours. Redhawks games, and OSC Olympics, they even brought in puppies for us to play with for 15-20 min one day.
Favorite thing about Fargo / Moorhead? Always something going on.
When I’m not at OSC you can find me…. At a race track! Summer I have my dad, husband, father in law, and a cousin that race stock cars on dirt. In the winter we can be found at a snow cross track watching snowmobiles race.
Favorite place to travel to? Duluth! Something about that place just warms my heart and takes all the worries away.
Favorite restaurant in town? Texas Road House
Favorite sports team? I have a few, Football- 49ers, Vikings because they are like a home team, Baseball-MN Twins, Chicago Cubs, and Hockey-MN Wild and UND(Sioux!)
What advice would you give to younger people trying to get into your profession? Follow your heart. Find something you are passionate about and go with it. If you love what you do it will make going to work less like work and more like playing.
