There are just certain things around us that we seem to always recognize and remember. Whether it be the golden arches of a certain hamburger joint, an endearing phrase spray-painted in an alley or a road sign that welcomes us home….we know these signs when we see them. In a word, they are simply, iconic.
Does this not go to show just how important killer signage is?! It can make or break your business. A good sign will be easily recognizable, memorable and unique. So we’ve rounded up ten of the most iconic signs and what we love about them.
1. McDonald’s
Whether you love it or hate it, we all know those golden arches, don’t we? The McDonald’s signs has to be one of the most iconic signs simply for the fact that it has stood the test of time and is nearly unavoidable due to the sheer volume of McDonald’s chains around the world.
2. Las Vegas
Sin City has to be the most over saturated place when it comes to flashy, look-at-me signs. But the retro vibe of the Las Vegas welcome sign allows it to stand out in a sea of signs and has truly stood the test of time.
3. Portland
A sign with some serious history…and name changes, this sign located in the Old Town section of Portland, Oregon has gone through three name changes in its lifetime. But we’re pretty sure that no matter what it said, it would remain a recognizable icon that Oregonians and tourists love dearly.
4. Pike Place Market
As a former Seattlite, this one is near and dear to my heart. Growing up, this sign always caught my eye when we’d pull into downtown and to this day remains an iconic symbol of the pride and joy of Seattle; their year-round public market place and farmers market.
5. I love you so much…
What started as a grand gesture via graffiti has turned into one of the most iconic signs in all of Texas. Sure it’s not much to look at, but it’s turned into a photo opportunity for just about everyone who finds it and it has left quite the impression on Austin, Texas.
6. Hollywood Sign
A true icon, the Hollywood Sign sits at 1,708 feet above sea level and towers over the city of Los Angeles. Its letters reach over 45 feet and the entire sign stretches over 350 feet long….making it truly recognizable for miles.
7. Route 66
One of the original highway systems in the United States, Route 66 covers nearly 2,500 miles, stretching from Chicago to Santa Monica, California. Though the original highway has been replaced my complex interstate systems, many portions of these interstates have paid homage to Route 66 with this iconic sign standing along the original route.
8. I Believe in Nashville
What initially began as one street artists self expression has turned into an icon for Music City and has gained massive attention worldwide. Locals, tourists and Instagrammers alike flock to this spot each year to grab a coveted picture in front of the sign.
9. Platform 9 3/4
We couldn’t skip something so iconic that even though it doesn’t truly exist, signs have been erected all over the place in honor of this made up location. Now that’s iconic.
10. Fargo sign
Last, but certainly not least…we couldn’t resist the urge to share our own little town and its iconic sign. The Fargo Theatre sign is easily the most recognizable thing about Fargo, North Dakota (besides the movie…and the TV show) and for a good reason. Its bright lights illuminate downtown at night and make those dreary winter day a little less gray.
