As a sign company, it seems evident that we would have an appreciation for the importance of signs, and while they may not always be as significant as we might think, one cannot overlook the commonality and impact of them. Signs are everywhere and they direct and convey important ideas, but being so common, it is easy to overlook or even completely ignore them. We are often so accustomed to signs that we don’t even think twice about them or what they are for. How often do you actually notice and make note of an EXIT sign?
Now, this can be good or bad. Ideally, the only time you need to see a sign is if you are looking for it, so it is great if the signage goes unnoticed until then. However, sometimes it can be difficult to convey a message or direction that someone may not be looking for. Ultimately, it’s about knowing what your sign is for. Our signs are customizable and come in various styles and options, so, the first thing you need to ask yourself, is this sign being used to inform/catch attention, or to direct/answer a question. Even simpler, will someone be actively looking out for this sign?
Signage that Blends in
If you answered yes to the previous question, then things should be pretty easy. If someone will be actively looking for this specific signage, there is not as much need for it to stand out. This leaves the opportunity to adjust the sign to fit its surroundings and blend in. This can be important in maintaining a professional appearance and just makes an overall better environment.
If you’re looking for this type of signage, consider where it will be going and how you can best match the sign to its environment. Our customizable signs have many different options when it comes to materials, color, and even build/shape, so you’ll have plenty to choose from. Usually, it will be good to go with more neutral colors, gray, black, silver, browns and dark blues, but if you can happen to find something that matches or compliments its surroundings (such as this restroom sign below), it can look even better!

Signage that Stands Out
Now, if your signage has a different purpose, and needs to get a point across, you may want to consider some different options. Generally speaking, for this purpose, you can follow the opposite instructions as given in the last section. You aren’t necessarily looking for something that will look out of place in its environment, rather something that just stands out. This might mean less neutral colors such as yellow or red, or even some shades of blue. This could also mean a whole new type of sign all together, whether larger in scale or something that literally stands out like a banner stand or standoff sign.

At the end of the day, this is just advice, and you don’t have to take it. What you want is the only thing that matters. We only urge you to consider the purpose of your sign, where it is going, and how you want people to see it. Signs are a great way to get a message or idea across, but they also have an impact on the business environment.
